Morningside College hosts “Pursuing Victory with Honor Summit” on Oct. 20

Iowa State University Basketball Coach Greg McDermott will be the keynote speaker for the “Pursuing Victory with Honor Summit” scheduled for the Morningside College campus on Tuesday, October 20.

Sponsored by Character Counts in Iowa, a non-profit organization based in Des Moines, the fifth annual summit will bring together student athletes in grades 8 through 12, coaches and administrators for a daylong series of programs and activities designed to strengthen character and encourage leadership. This is the first time the summit has been held in western Iowa. Previous summits have been hosted at the University of Northern Iowa, Drake University, University of Iowa and Iowa State University.

McDermott, who will begin his fourth season as head basketball coach at ISU, will speak during the summit’s opening session at 9 a.m. in Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Avenue, on the Morningside College campus.

Morningside coaches, staff and faculty will lead breakout sessions during the morning on topics such as dealing with adversity, achieving goals, setting high standards, gender and leadership effectiveness, and building character through sports. Representatives from the South Sioux City Community School District, Heelan High School, the Waitt Institute for Violence Prevention and the juvenile court division of Iowa’s Third Judicial District also will lead sessions.

To view descriptions of breakout sessions and to register for the summit online go to www.CharacterCountsInIowa.org.

In addition to Character Counts in Iowa, other summit sponsors include Morningside College, Iowa Health System, the Iowa Games and the Iowa National Guard.
