The nursing education departments at Morningside College and Briar Cliff University have jointly chartered the Theta Gamma-at-Large Chapter of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International.
Dr. Jackie Barber, associate professor of nursing education at Morningside and Theta Gamma-at-Large Chapter president, will conduct the chartering ceremony at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, in the Stark Student Center at Briar Cliff University.
Approval for the Theta Gamma-at-Large Chapter was granted at the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International biennial convention last year in Washington D.C.
Membership in the honor society is by invitation and is extended to undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty and professional nurses who have demonstrated superior scholastic, leadership and nursing achievements.
The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to improve the health of people worldwide through leadership and scholarship in practice, education and research. Founded in 1922, the honor society currently has 134,000 active members in more than 80 countries. Members include practicing nurses, instructors, researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs and others.
The honor society’s 463 chapters are located at 571 institutions of higher education throughout the United States, as well as in Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Ghana, Hong Kong, Japan, Kenya, Malawi, Mexico, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Swaziland, Sweden, Taiwan, Tanzania and Wales.
Theta Gamma-at-Large Chapter officers who will be installed on October 7 are Jackie Barber, EdD, MS, RN, president; Lori Doeschot, MS, RN, vice president; Lori Forneris MSN, RN, vice president; Cindy Lewin, ARNP, treasurer; Yvonne Downs, BSN, RN, secretary; Sharlene Georgesen, MSN, RN, Morningside College faculty advisor; Mary Kay Nissen, MSN, RN, COHN-S, Briar Cliff University faculty advisor; Rick Petersen, EdD, MSN, RN, nomination committee; Melanie Batien, BSN, RN, nomination committee; and Maxine Kilstrom, MS, RN, nomination committee.
Following the chartering ceremony, a reception will be held in the Saint Francis Room located in the Stark Student Center.
