Assistant professor of modern languages at Morningside College earns doctorate

Jeffrey HerlihyJeffrey Herlihy, assistant professor of modern languages at Morningside College, earned a doctorate this summer from Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Boston College and a master’s degree from Universitat Pompeu Fabra. His doctoral program was called Arte, Literatura y Pensamiento – or Art, Literature and Thought. He studied in the humanities department at Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

Herlihy received a Ver Steeg Grant from Morningside College to go to Europe this summer to defend his doctoral thesis and to present papers at two conferences. He presented “El Chicago de Sandra Cisneros: ‘¡¿Tú vives allí?!’” – or “‘Sandra Cisneros’s Chicago: ‘you live there?’” – in May at the VI Congreso Internacional en Literatura Chicana in Alicante, Spain, and “Ernest Hemingway’s Short Stories in This Quarter Magazine: Political Reflections in Small Print” in June at Colloque revues modernistes Le Mans 2008 – or Modernist Magazines Symposium Le Mans 2008 – in Le Mans, France. He defended his doctoral thesis in Barcelona in July.

Herlihy accepted a full-time position at Morningside College in the fall of 2007, returning after he served as a visiting instructor at the college in the fall of 2006. He has spent a total of six years in Spanish-speaking countries since 1999.
