Diana Garcia, a student at Morningside College, will talk about “Becoming a Global Citizen” on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 11:45 a.m. in the UPS Auditorium of the Lincoln Center, 3627 Peters Ave.
The public is invited to the free event, which is sponsored by Morningside’s Academic and Cultural Arts Series (ACAS).
Garcia was raised in Mexico and came to Sioux City when she was in high school. She spoke little or no English when she came here. However, she went on to graduate from North High School, and she is now a senior at Morningside. Last year she studied in Ormskirk, England, and traveled extensively while she was there.
Garcia said that by the time she went to England, she considered herself a Mexican-American. She said she had two home countries, both the United States and Mexico.
“I don’t think I’m a bilingual person,” she said. “I think I’m a bicultural person because my personality comes from both cultures – not just one.”
At the event on Oct. 17, Garcia will do a PowerPoint presentation about her hometown, her life growing up, her immigration to Sioux City, and her travels abroad.
