Philip
S. Bryant, poet and associate professor of English
at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., will read
excerpts from his book of poetry, "Sermon on a Perfect Spring
Day," at Morningside College on Thursday,
Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the UPS Auditorium of the Lincoln
Center, 3627 Peters Avenue. The public is invited
to attend this free event, which is sponsored by the Sioux
City Reading Series and Morningside's Cultural Academic and
Arts Series (ACAS).
Bryant was born and
raised in Chicago and attended the Chicago Public Schools.
He holds a bachelor's degree in English from Gustavus Adolphus
College and master's degree in creative writing from Columbia
University 's School of the Arts. His poetry has been published
in "The Iowa Review," "The Indiana Review," "The American
Poetry Review," and "Nimrod," to name a few. He has published
a chapbook of poetry titled " Blue Island ," and his work
is also included in a musical program of poetry and jazz titled
"South Side Suite," done in collaboration with singer and
composer Carolyn Wilkins.
The Sioux
City Reading Series, which began in 1998, brings nationally
published poets, novelists, and short story writers to Sioux
City each semester to give readings and occasionally conduct
workshops or discussions with students and others interested
in writing. Dr. Stephen Coyne, professor of English at Morningside,
is creator and coordinator of the series.
