Donald
Kelsey, a 1949 Morningside College graduate, will
be presented with the 2004 Paul MacCollin/Leo
Kucinski Alumni Award in recognition of his lifelong
contributions to music during the Morningside music department's
2004 Homecoming concert on Sunday,
Oct. 31, at 1:30 p.m. in Eppley Auditorium. The
public is invited to the free event, which is sponsored by
Morningside's Academic and Cultural Arts Series (ACAS).
The MacCollin/Kucinski
Alumni Award, named in honor of the two longtime faculty members
of Morningside's music department, will be presented by Karen
Burton, the granddaughter of Paul MacCollin and 1974 graduate
of Morningside.
Kelsey serves on
the board of directors of the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra
Association and was the director of the Abu Bekr Shrine Chanters
for 45 years before he retired from that position at the end
of 2003. He graduated from Morningside with majors in music,
education, history, and pre-law. Kelsey later moved to New
York City to study vocal music at The Julliard School of Music.
He was a vocalist with the Metropolitan Opera, the Roxy Theater,
and the Philadelphia Philharmonic. Kelsey returned to Sioux
City in 1957 and began teaching at the former Leeds High School,
then changed careers to become a Prudential life insurance
agent.
