Morningside student receives “best attorney” award for mock trial

Beth NortonBeth Norton of Yuma, Ariz., a sophomore at Morningside College, was recognized recently as a “best attorney” at the Cornell College Mock Trial Invitational in Mount Vernon, Iowa.  She was one of only 10 competitors to receive the award.

“In a very competitive tournament, with some of the top teams in the nation competing, it is very rewarding that Beth’s skills as an attorney were recognized by the judges,” said Dr. Lillian Lopez, associate professor of political science and a mock trial team coach at Morningside.

The tournament featured students from colleges and universities around the country, including the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, Northwestern University in Chicago, and Rhodes College in Tennessee.

The Morningside College Mock Trial Team meets weekly to prepare cases and scrimmage for competitions. The team has attended tournaments in places such as Yale University in New Haven, Conn., and University of California, Los Angeles. The Morningside mock trial is also coached by Amy Ellis, attorney for the Woodbury County Attorney’s Office in Sioux City.
