Accomplished poetry slam champion George Watsky will perform at Morningside College on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 8 p.m. in Buckingham’s Snack Bar, located in the lower level of the Olsen Student Center, 3609 Peters Avenue.
The public is invited to the free event, which is sponsored by Morningside’s Academic and Cultural Arts Series (ACAS) and the Morningside Activities Council (MAC).
Watsky was the 2006 Youth Speaks Grand Slam Poetry champion, the 2006 Brave New Voices International Poetry Slam champion, and a performer in a record six consecutive Youth Speaks Grand Slam Finals.
A poetry slam is a competition where poets read or recite original work and the performances are then judged on a numeric scale by previously selected members of the audience.
Watsky was featured on the sixth season of “Russell Simmons presents Def Poetry” on HBO and in 2006 he was the recipient of Robert Redford’s Sundance Summit Award for poetry on climate change. His one-man show, “So Many Levels,” has been presented in Boston, San Francisco, Vermont, and at the Hip Hop Theater Festival Critical Breaks series in New York City. His debut poetry collection and CD “Undisputed Backtalk Champion,” published by First Word Press, sold out its first printing and is currently in its fourth printing.
He has performed at the Apollo Theater, the Kennedy Center Concert Hall, the San Francisco Opera House, and the Great American Music Hall.
