Morningside College senior Matthew Vonnahme of Sioux City received a Witness Award for his role in the The Macalester Trials mock trial competition held Nov. 3-5, at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.
Vonnahme, who is a member of one of Morningside’s two Mock Trial teams for the 2006-2007 academic year, is majoring in business administration with an emphasis in finance.
Morningside’s Mock Trial teams were two of 47 teams from 23 colleges and universities from across the country competing in The Macalester Trials invitational tournament. Other participating schools included DePaul University, Drake University, Grinnell College, and Iowa State University, to name a few.
Morningside’s Mock Trial teams reorganized in the fall of 2004 after nearly a ten-year absence. Faculty advisor for the Mock Trial teams is Dr. Lillian Lopez, associate professor of history and political science. Lawyer-coach for the teams is Daniel B. Shuck, partner in the law firm of Heidman, Redmond, Fredregill, Patterson, Plaza, Dykstra, and Prahl, LLP in Sioux City.
The undergraduate mock trial program was first organized in 1985 at Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa. Its purpose is to give undergraduate students an opportunity to learn first hand about the work of trial attorneys, understand the judicial system, develop critical thinking, and enhance communication skills.
