Dr. Sean Meehan, assistant professor of English at Morningside College, had his essay “Living, Learning: Lessons from Emerson’s School” published in the fall 2006 edition of Emerson Society Papers, the official publication of the Ralph Waldo Emerson Society. The publication is produced by Worchester Polytechnic Institute in Massachucetts.
Meehan’s essay explores Emerson’s interest in eduation and early experiences as a school teacher and is based on research he did in the summer of 2006 at Houghton Library, Harvard University, with a fellowship from Harvard and support from a Ver Steeg faculty development grant at Morningside College.
Meehan is currently at work on a book that will explore Emerson’s interest in education and argue for an “Emersonian” vision for American learning. He is the author of several published papers and book reviews in journals such as Prose Studies, Biography: An Interdisciplinary Quarterly, and Iowa Journal of Cultural Studies.
Meehan joined the Morningside faculty in 2004. He received his undergraduate degree in English from Princeton University, a master’s degree in English and American literature from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and a doctorate in English and American literature from the University of Iowa. He is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and the Modern Languages Association.
