In addition, the college will host a Christmas banquet prior to the concert on Dec. 9, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Main Dining Hall of the Olsen Student Center, 3609 Peters Ave. Cost for the banquet is $12 for adults and $6 for students.
Christmas at Morningside is a unique musical tradition held during December at Morningside College. The theme of this year’s concert is “God With Us” and features such traditional and contemporary selections as “Oh Come, All Ye Faithful,” “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “Riu Riu Chiu,” “Medley of Carols,” “Sanctus from ‘Missa Kenya’,” and “Gesù Bambino.”
No applause is given during the approximately 90-minute concert, allowing the emotion and meaning of the music to flow from one piece to the next without pause. Over one hundred Morningside College musicians work together throughout the fall semester to prepare for this single musical event.
Featured choral and instrumental ensembles will include Morningside College’s Bel Canto Women’s Chorus, Choral Union, College Choir, Recorder Consort, Singing Men, String Quartet, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and Trumpet Ensemble.
Dr. Gerald Bouma, professor and chair of music at Morningside, will serve as narrator. Esther D’Agrosa, associate professor of music, Clifford Towner and Timothy Watson, assistant professors of music, and Jill Wilson, director of the Leo Kucinski Academy of Music, will direct the choral and wind ensembles. Amy Joseph, member of the Euclid Quartet, will direct the string quartet. Dr. Gail Dooley, soprano and associate professor of music, will perform as vocal soloist. Mabel Huldeen, Michele Grossman, and Jane Sibley will accompany the ensembles.
Reservations for the banquet will be available until Dec. 7. Reservations for the banquet, concert, or both may be made by calling the Morningside College music department at (712) 274-5210. Tickets for the concert will also be available at the door on the night of the performance.
