John Hughes, board
chair and former president and chief executive officer (CEO)
of the Coleman Foundation Inc., a private charitable foundation,
will speak on "Passions of an Entrepreneur" at an event at
Morningside College on Friday, Nov. 19, at 1:45 p.m. in the
UPS Auditorium of the Lincoln Center. The free event is sponsored
by the business
department and the Center for Entrepreneurship Education
at Morningside and is open to the public.
Hughes got his start
without any formal education, dropping out of high school
in 1944 and earning his GED after World War II. He received
his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificate from the
University of Illinois in 1957 after attending night classes
and later founded his own CPA firm, which he sold in 1980.
He served as CEO of Archibald Candy Corp. and Fannie May Candy
Shops, Inc. from 1981 to 1991.
Hughes is also president
and CEO of the John W. and Jeanne T. Hughes Foundation and
part owner of the Schaumburg Flyers, a professional baseball
club in the independent Northern League. He speaks at numerous
universities, conferences, and elementary schools, and has
been recognized for his success in more than 100 publications
and presentations.
Since its inception
in 1980, the Coleman Foundation has approved $85 million in
grants for cancer care, treatment, and research, handicapped
housing and education, and education programs in the area
of entrepreneurship. A grant from the Coleman Foundation established
the Center for Entrepreneurship Education at Morningside College
in 2002. The Center's purpose is to foster student self-sufficiency
through self-employment, and provides initiatives through
co-curricular programming, faculty development, and community
outreach.
