A team from Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City captured the 2013 Quiz Bowl Tournament championship after defeating a team from Le Mars, Iowa, Community High School in a final-round contest broadcast Sunday, May 12, on KCAU-TV.
Members of the winning Heelan team were Joel Harris, Louis Noel, Christian Pratt and Garrett Rethman. Other students who also played on the Heelan team during the 14 weeks of televised completion that led to the championship round were Michael Feste, Daniel Goebel, Sean Miller and Stephen Moeller. Nan Kiel, a history teacher and chair of the social studies department, is the Heelan coach.
Sixteen high school teams won their way to televised Quiz Bowl competition after participating in a preliminary tournament January 12 on the Morningside College campus. The televised contests started airing on February 3.
Other Quiz Bowl teams that qualified for the broadcast competitions were from Sioux City North, West Point-Beemer, Le Mars Gehlen, Westwood, Laurel-Concord, Wisner-Pilger, Allen, Sioux City East, Dakota Valley, Winside, Unity Christian, Sergeant Bluff-Luton, West Monona and Estherville Lincoln Center.
Each 30-minute Quiz Bowl broadcast on KCAU-TV featured two teams vying for points by correctly answering questions that range over the entire spectrum of a high school curriculum and current events. Julie Eickhoff of McCook Lake, S.D., served as the on-air host and moderator for the broadcast competitions.
All of the Quiz Bowl contests were taped in television studios on the Morningside College campus for later broadcast on KCAU-TV.
