Morningside College launches the 2012 season of its Betty Ling Tsang Summer Fine Arts Series with the Tony Award-winning musical “Rent” at 7 p.m. June 8 and 9 in the Buhler Outdoor Performance Center, 3625 Garretson Avenue, on the college’s campus.
“Rent”– the first of five productions scheduled this summer for Morningside's amphitheater-style performance center – is a rock musical about impoverished young artists struggling to survive in New York’s Lower East Side. On Broadway, “Rent” gained critical acclaim and won a Tony Award for Best Musical, among others.
In the event of rain, performances will move to Klinger-Neal Theatre, 3700 Peters Avenue, on the Morningside campus.
The Betty Ling Tsang Summer Fine Arts Series is named for the late Betty Ling Tsang, a 1940 Morningside College music graduate. It is designed to bring free, quality music and theatre performances to residents of the Sioux City area.
Other events scheduled for this summer include a musical theatre camp with a performance on June 22, a Sioux City Symphony pops concert with fireworks on June 30; “Cinderella” on July 20 and 21; and “Fiddler on the Roof” (concert version) on Aug. 10 and 11. All performances are free and open to the public.
