Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools String Program to present spring concert

The Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools String Program, in partnership with the Leo Kucinski Academy of Music at Morningside College, will present its final concert of the school year at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, in Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Ave.

Students from Holy Cross, Mater Dei and Sacred Heart schools will be playing the violin, viola or cello in two different groups. The Suzuki Strings are a group of young students in pre-kindergarten through second grade who play all their music memorized and have learned using the Suzuki method of instruction, where a family member is the teacher at home. The Orchestra Strings are a group of students in third through ninth grade who play by reading music.

Selections to be performed range from “Mississippi Hot Dog,” “Iowa Iowa” and “Taka Taka Peanut Butter” to “Minuet I,” “Allegro” and “Song of the Wind.” Both the performers and the audience will be on the stage for this concert, allowing both great acoustics and close proximity to the performers.

The Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools String Program began in February 2007 as an after-school program. Students take lessons once a week after school and practice daily at home. Gary Fridley is the teacher of the program at all Bishop Heelan Catholic School locations in Sioux City. The concert is free, open to the public and handicap accessible.
