Morningside College conferred 255 bachelor’s degrees and 216 Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degrees during its 111th spring commencement exercises held Saturday, May 9.
In addition to the spring graduates, degrees were conferred upon August and December 2008 graduates, as well as students expected to graduate in August 2009. Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees were conferred upon Roger H. Martin of Mamaroneck, N.Y., former president of Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va., and Nancy R. Metz of Dakota Dunes, S.D., a member of the Morningside College Board of Directors.
John Bowitz, professor and chair of the art department at Morningside, received the 2009 Lucille and Charles Wert Faculty Award for excellence in teaching. The award recognizes the faculty member judged by his or her peers to best exemplify the ideas of the academic teaching profession at Morningside.
Bowitz joined the Morningside faculty in 1977. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and a master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. As an artist, much of Bowitz’s work is done in mixed media with drawing materials, paint, ceramics, collage, computer modified images and found objects. His work has been included in one-person exhibitions and group and juried shows throughout the United States.
Outstanding graduates were recognized with special awards in their fields of study. Tyler Childress of Alvord, Iowa, and Russell Heine of York, Neb., received the Dr. Tom Curry Outstanding Business Student Award, given in memory of the late Tom Curry, who was associate professor of business administration and economics at Morningside from 1991 to 2005.

G. Knepper Award in English; Bryan Hansen of Sioux City, Lorraine E. Knepper Award in Nursing; and Kristina Sturm of Polk City, Iowa, Douglas E. Wood Award in Education.
Four graduates were recognized with Dean’s Awards, for their outstanding academic achievements in one of the four areas that comprise the Morningside College curriculum, including: Robert Blackburn III of Knoxville, Iowa, Dean’s Award in Fine Arts; Christina Thomsen of Denison, Iowa, Dean’s Award in Humanities; Preston Pierce of Anthon, Iowa, Dean’s Award in Professional Services and Influence; and Sabrina Higgins of Des Moines, Iowa, Dean’s Award in Sciences.
