Lillian López and Patrick McKinlay, associate professors of history and political science at Morningside College, presented papers at the American Political Science Association’s 2008 Teaching and Learning Conference this spring in San Diego, Calif.
They presented a paper they co-authored called “Serving the Greater Good: Delivering General Education Outcomes in a Small Liberal Arts College.” This paper examined the re-design of several courses to meet the needs of majors while remaining accessible to non-majors.
McKinlay also presented “Political Hermeneutics as Pedagogy: Service Learning, Political Reflection.” This paper examined the challenge of teaching a theory of citizenship in light of the current political malaise that disempowers students and their efforts to imagine any sort of authentic political action.
López joined the faculty at Morningside in 1990. She holds a bachelor’s degree and juris doctorate from the University of Puerto Rico and a master’s degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. She serves as director of Morningside’s Office of International Student Services and is faculty advisor for the International Students Association and the Mock Trial Team.
McKinlay has been with Morningside since 1994. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls and a master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. He is faculty advisor for the Morningside Civic Union.
