Morningside graduates receive diplomas at 110th commencement exercises

Morningside College conferred 144 bachelor’s degrees and 147 Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degrees during its 110th spring commencement exercises held Saturday, May 10.

In addition to the 291 spring graduates, degrees were conferred upon August and December 2007 graduates, as well as students expected to graduate in August 2008. Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees were conferred upon Barry Backhaus of Sioux City, former president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of Vantus Bank; Richard Ducommun of Colorado Springs, Colo., a Sioux City native and businessman; and Edward Rogalski of Davenport, Iowa, former president of St. Ambrose University in Davenport.

Heather Reid, associate professor and chair of philosophy at Morningside, received the 2008 Lucille and Charles Wert Faculty Award for excellence in teaching.  The award recognizes the faculty member judged by his or her peers to best exemplify the ideas of the academic teaching profession at Morningside.

Reid joined the Morningside faculty in 1996. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and a master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Reid has received international recognition for her expertise on the philosophical foundations of the Olympic Games and has served as president of the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport.  Reid is author of the book “The Philosophical Athlete” and also has written numerous scholarly articles and book chapters on ancient Greek philosophy, sport philosophy and Olympic studies.  She received the Sharon Walker Faculty Excellence Award in 2004 and was named faculty person of the year in 1999-2000 by the Morningside Chapter of the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society.

Outstanding graduates were recognized with special awards in their fields of study.  Jordon Wall of Sioux City and Samantha Wenger of Danbury, Iowa, received the Dr. Tom Curry Outstanding Business Student Award, given in memory of the late Tom Curry, who was associate professor of business administration and economics at Morningside from 1991 to 2005.

G. Knepper Award in English; Christina Loft of Sioux City, Lorraine E. Knepper Award in Nursing; Rachel Bellairs of Clarinda, Iowa, Montford and Gertrude Knepper Award in English; and Lindsey Mohr of Ocheyedan, Iowa, Dr. Patrick J. Murphy Award in Education.

Four graduates were recognized with Dean’s Awards, for their outstanding academic achievements in one of the four areas that comprise the Morningside College curriculum, including: Judy Leinen of Des Moines, Iowa, Dean’s Award in Fine Arts; Kathryn Kotlik of Bellevue, Neb., Dean’s Award in Humanities; Brian Johnson of Bronson, Iowa, Dean’s Award in Professional Services and Influence; and Leah Winter of Sioux City, Dean’s Award in Sciences.

Morningside College awards general honors based on undergraduate work completed at the college and according to the grade point averages (GPAs) designated as follows:

*Cum Laude (with honor) at 3.50

**Magna Cum Laude (with great honor) at 3.66

***Summa Cum Laude (with highest honor) at 3.81.
