"The Snapping Turtle's Head" |
John Bowitz and Shannon Sargent had their collaborative art published in the 2008 editions of both “Kiosk” and “The Briar Cliff Review.”
Bowitz is professor and chair of the art department at Morningside College. Sargent, a 2004 Morningside graduate, is registrar/preparator at the Sioux City Art Center.
“Kiosk” and “The Briar Cliff Review” are the literary magazines of Morningside College and Briar Cliff University, respectively. They both feature a juried selection of visual arts. This is the first year that the same artists have been chosen by both magazines. It is also the first year for collaborative art pieces to be published. Collaborative pieces are works where two or more artists share ideas and work on the same piece.
Visual arts jurors for the Morningside College “Kiosk” were Ann McTaggart and Darren Maurer, with Katie Kes as visual editor. Art editors for “The Briar Cliff Review” were Karen Chesterman and Jeff Baldus.
“Dragon,” a polychrome, 4-foot, 29-sided wooden sculpture appears in “The Briar Cliff Review,” while “The Snapping Turtle’s Head” appears in the Morningside College “Kiosk.” Both pieces use a variety of materials, including acrylic paint, acrylic plastic, collage, paper, graphite, colored pencil, paint markers and fiber-tip markers. Writing and images play across their surfaces. “The Snapping Turtle’s Head” is 22 inches by 30 inches, and it has 11 companion pieces. That larger work is part of the Bowitz/Sargent exhibition on display at the University of South Dakota Main Art Gallery until Tuesday, June 3.
