“Residual Images,” an installation of collaborative art by John Bowitz and Shannon Sargent, will be exhibited from Wednesday, May 14, until Tuesday, June 3, in the Main Art Gallery at the University of South Dakota. Concurrent with this installation, Sargent will install his own piece, “Recycled Images,” in the same gallery.
A public reception for the show will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 18, in the art gallery.
Collaborative art is where two or more artists share ideas and work on the same piece. Bowitz is professor and chair of the art department at Morningside College. Sargent, a 2004 Morningside graduate, is registrar/preparator at the Sioux City Art Center.
Most of the pieces in this exhibition are mixed-media installations. They are large, measuring up to 12 feet by 16 feet. Acrylic paint, acrylic plastic, collage, stoneware and earthenware clay, furniture, polychromed wood, paper, canvas, a plethora of drawing media and found objects were used. Most pieces were constructed from smaller segments that create a much larger unit. The piece nicknamed “Big 9” consists of nine canvases, each 40-inch squares. Each square has its own composition that contributes to the larger work. Often writing and images come together to entertain or perplex the viewer.
Sargent has said, “Working with John has busted my brain and mended his, but my art has gotten better.” Bowitz views the show as the record of a visual conversation between two artists.
