A showing and discussion of the 1953 western movie “Shane” will take place at Morningside College at 7 p.m. Monday, March 18, in the UPS Auditorium in Lincoln Center, 3627 Peters Ave.
Jen Peterson, assistant professor of English at Morningside College, will lead the discussion of the film. The event is free and open to the public.
“Shane,” by Jack Schaefer, is the 2013 selection for One Book One Siouxland, the community-wide reading initiative in the tri-state area. Now in its eighth season, One Book One Siouxland continues to share ideas and build community through the experience of reading and discussing the same book and viewing a film adaptation of the story.
The film version of the novel opened to capacity crowds in Radio City Music Hall in New York City in April 1953 and went on to earn six Academy Award nominations. It was ranked 45th in the 2007 edition of the American Film Institute’s “100 Years…100 Movies” list and placed third among the American Film Institute’s Top 10 Westerns.
One Book One Siouxland is sponsored by the Sioux City Public Library, the South Sioux City Public Library and the North Sioux City Community Library, in partnership with The Institute for Lifelong Learning, Western Iowa Tech Community College and Morningside College.
