Morningside College Math Department to celebrate Pi Day

The Morningside College Math Department will celebrate Pi Day on March 14 with slices of pie and a lecture on “The Mysterious Pi” by Dr. James Coykendall, mathematics professor at North Dakota State University. The lecture will take place at 11:45 a.m. in the UPS Auditorium of the Lincoln Center, 3627 Peters Avenue.

Math department faculty will serve pie in the Lincoln Center lobby prior to the lecture.

The Greek letter pi represents an irrational number that is the ratio of any circle’s circumference to its diameter.

“Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14 of each year because the date, 3-14, represents the first three digits of pi,” said Chris Spicer, assistant professor of mathematical sciences at Morningside College.
