Nearly 400 Morningside College students will leave their classrooms and textbooks behind when they go “Into the Streets” for a morning of community service on Tuesday, March 23.
Organized by Morningside’s chapter of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), a national leadership honor society, “Into the Streets” gives student groups and teams an opportunity to volunteer at more than 20 not-for-profit agencies in the Sioux City area from 9 a.m. to noon on March 23.
The Morningside student volunteers will receive their agency assignments at an 8 a.m. breakfast orientation meeting in Eppley Auditorium. For the rest of the morning, students will perform a variety of service work – cleaning, painting, delivering Meals on Wheels, moving files, reading to elementary school students, yard cleanup – for agencies that include Ronald McDonald House, Siouxland Aging Services, the City of South Sioux City, Woodbury County Conservation Board and Siouxland Habitat for Humanity.
Rebecca Anderson, a Morningside junior from Lawton, Iowa, is coordinating the service project with assistance from a student committee that includes Kelsey Uherka of Stanton, Iowa; Krystal Shearer of Emerson, Iowa; Miriam Pfahler of Pierre, S.D.; Jessica Rix of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Sarah Culp of Newell, Iowa; and Kylie Helmink of Fairbury, Neb.
