Former professors will return to Morningside for lecture on popular culture

Former Morningside College professors Dr. Robert Jewett and Dr. John Lawrence will return to Sioux City to give a joint Wright Lecture about the meanings of popular culture at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 25, in the UPS Auditorium in Lincoln Center, 3627 Peters Ave.

This event is free and open to the public.

Both Jewett and Lawrence are widely published in their own fields, religious studies and philosophy respectively, but they also are co-authors of “The American Monomyth,” a classic work about American popular culture first published in 1977 and substantially revised and republished in 2002 as “The Myth of the American Superhero.” Their joint lecture will reflect on the book, first written while they were colleagues at Morningside, and its continuing significance today. A public reception will follow.

The Wright Lecture series started at Morningside College in 1981. It is funded by an endowment established by Dr. and Mrs. Ernest Wright.

Also while in Sioux City, Jewett will be a guest lecturer from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 4600 Hamilton Blvd. There is a fee to attend this event, and pre-registration for the event is encouraged. More information is available at www.firstcongregational.net.
