Professor appointed as a fellow for the Homeland Security Institute   

Sam ClovisSam Clovis, chairperson of the Morningside College Business Administration and Economics Department, has been appointed as a fellow of the Homeland Security Institute (HSI) in Arlington, Va.

The HSI is a congressionally chartered, federally funded research and development center that supports the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the homeland security mission. Clovis has been affiliated with the HSI since 2004.

As a fellow for the HSI, Clovis is part of a group of experts providing analyses and advice on homeland security issues, particularly those requiring scientific, technical and analytical expertise. The HSI fellows represent a range of academic disciplines including business and finance, computer science, economics, engineering, mathematics, operations analysis, the physical sciences, and social and behavioral science.

Clovis performs work for the HSI outside of his teaching duties at Morningside. He has authored several major studies for the HSI and the DHS in the last two years. He is scheduled to deliver three papers related to homeland security at national conferences this spring. In addition, the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., has invited Clovis to give a presentation this fall on homeland security and defense.

Clovis began teaching at Morningside in 2005. He has extensive experience in public, private and non-profit sectors including various operational and consulting roles with the United States military, the RAND Corporation, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Northrop Grumman Corporation, among others. He was assistant professor of business at William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa, where he also served as dean of the College for Working Adults and founding dean of the College of Business and Management Science. Clovis holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado, a master’s degree in business from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, Calif., and a doctorate in public administration from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala.
