Bridget Gray, who has won poetry slams on HBO and across the country, will present original poems at Morningside College at 8 p.m. Monday, March 10, in Buck’s Snack Bar in the lower level of the Olsen Student Center, 3609 Peters Ave.
The public is invited to the free event, which is sponsored by Morningside’s Academic and Cultural Arts Series (ACAS) and the Morningside College Activities Council (MAC).
Gray is an accomplished poetry slam champion who performs pieces about being a woman, being a daughter and other social issues. After pursuing a degree from Northern Illinois University, Gray went to Los Angeles to be an actress and writer. She made a cameo appearance in “Austin Powers 2,” had guest starring roles in CBS’s “The District,” UPN’s “The Hughleys” and Disney’s “The Magic Jersey,” and was featured in Madonna’s “Music” video.
Later Gray combined her love for performance and poetry and in 1999 won the first competitive poetry slam she entered. She has since performed at hip-hop spots all over Southern California and has been a featured poet on ABC’s “Eye On L.A.,” BET’s “Lyric Café” and HBO’s “Def Poetry Jam.” She has released two CDs, “Shades of Gray,” which sold more than 15,000 copies, and “Self Love.”
