Morningside College to present “The Music Man” in concert

Morningside College will present “The Music Man” in concert at 7 p.m. on July 8 and 9 in the Buhler Outdoor Performance Center, 3625 Garretson Ave., on the college’s campus.

The show, which is free and open to the public, is part of the college’s Betty Ling Tsang Summer Fine Arts Series.

“The Music Man” follows Harold Hill, a con man, who poses as a boys' band organizer and sells band instruments and uniforms to naive townsfolk in River City, Iowa.  Prim librarian Marian Paroo sees through him, but when Harold helps her younger brother overcome his fear of social interactions, Marian falls in love with him. Harold falls for her too and risks being caught to win her love.

The original production opened on Broadway in 1957, winning five Tony Awards including Best Musical, and it ran for more than 1,300 performances. The cast album won the first Grammy Award for Best Original Cast Album.

Randy Peters, artistic director for the Betty Ling Tsang Summer Fine Arts Series, said the series is named for the late Betty Ling Tsang, a 1940 Morningside College music graduate. The series is designed to bring quality music and theatre performances to residents of the Sioux City area.

In the event of rain, performances will move to Klinger-Neal Theatre, 3700 Peters Ave., on the Morningside campus.

Remaining performances in the 2011 Betty Ling Tsang Summer Fine Arts Series include the one-woman show “The Belle of Amherst” with Barbara Kingsley on July 22 and 23; the children’s musical “Hansel and Gretel” on Aug. 5 and 6; and the rock/jam band Quartus on Aug. 20. All performances are free and open to the public.
