Morningside College students recently created 50 digital books for children to be used in schools in Uganda and Sierra Leone.
The students created nonfiction books ranging in topic from the solar system to fractions to Greek gods. The books were then put on a flash drive and sent to the nonprofit organization E-luminate, along with money to support buying computers and generators for classrooms. E-luminate reports that digital books are a more affordable, efficient and environmentally friendly way to get educational materials to children in Sierra Leone and Uganda.
Morningside students involved with this project were either members of the Morningside chapter of the Iowa State Education Association (ISEA) or students in classes taught by Shelley Molland, visiting instructor of education at Morningside College and the ISEA chapter advisor.
Each book has a final page with a picture of the author and a message of hope.
“My name is Eric and I am an Education student at a college in America,” said one Morningside student. “As an education student, I felt motivated to write a book to help you grow in your education. I feel that everyone can relate to running because it is a great metaphor for life. I wish you the best of luck in your future, and I hope you go above and beyond to chase down your dreams.”
