ARC of Woodbury County recently honored Lorna Leavitt, associate professor of education at Morningside College, as its Educator of the Year.
ARC of Woodbury County promotes and protects the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and actively supports their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes.
This organization honored Leavitt for her work at Morningside with future special education teachers and for her support of the Best Buddies program, where students serve as mentors to the intellectually disabled.
“She just shows a lot of leadership, caring and support to the intellectually disabled – not just the individuals themselves but also the people who are working with them,” said Dick Owens, past president of ARC of Woodbury County. “She’s just very visible in the community in what she’s doing.”
Leavitt has been on the faculty at Morningside College since 2005. She previously taught in Iowa’s public schools as a special education instructor for Cherokee Community School District, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Community School District, and River Valley Community School District. She also served as an adjunct instructor at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. Leavitt earned a master’s degree in special education from Morningside College in 1995.
