Dr. Jeanne Emmons,
professor of English at Briar Cliff University, will present
a program on the relationship between creativity and mental
illness on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at
7 p.m. in the UPS Auditorium of Lincoln Center.
The event is part of the Academic and Cultural Arts Series
(ACAS) at Morningside and is free and open to the public.
Emmons' program,
"The Lunatic, the Lover, and the Poet: Creativity and Madness,"
will compare the connections between poetic genius and mental
illness, particularly bipolar disorder, previously known as
manic-depressive disorder.
Emmons is poetry editor
of The Briar Cliff Review. Her fiction and poetry have appeared
in numerous literary publications, including American Scholar,
Cimarron Review, Prairie Schooner, Southern Humanities Review,
and others. Her collection of poetry, " Rootbound ," won the
Minnesota Voices Competition. Emmons holds bachelor's, master's,
and doctoral degrees from the University of Texas. She has
been a faculty member at Briar Cliff University since 1980.
