The effects of Midwestern roots and travels abroad on Ernest Hemingway’s writing will be discussed by Jeffrey Herlihy, assistant professor of Spanish at Morningside College, during a lecture at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, in the UPS Auditorium of Lincoln Center, 3627 Peters Ave.

The public is invited to this free event, which is sponsored by the Academic and Cultural Arts Series (ACAS) at Morningside College.

Prior to living in France, Spain and Cuba, Hemingway spent his youth in Illinois and Michigan, and his maternal grandparents were from Dyersville, Iowa. During his years abroad, Hemingway carried his Midwestern identity as an indicator of his values and sense of self. The author also used many experiences from his boyhood in America—like hunting, fishing and the outdoors—in his writing. This lecture will explore the importance of Hemingway’s Midwestern roots on his fiction, together with a discussion of how foreign languages, cultures and societies affected the life of one of America’s most famous authors.

“There is a local, Midwestern flavor to much of Hemingway’s writing, in spite of the far-off settings,” Herlihy said. “It is really compelling to think about the places, people and events that shaped this man’s fiction – as he has been so influential not only in American literature, but also in what it means to be an American.”

Herlihy has a doctorate from Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain. He accepted a full-time position at Morningside College in the fall of 2007, returning after he served as a visiting instructor at the college in the fall of 2006. He has spent a total of six years in Spanish-speaking countries since 1999.
