The Mt. Zion Steppers will perform during a presentation about step dancing on Monday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. in the Yockey Family Community Room located in the Olsen Student Center, 3609 Peters Ave.
The public is invited to the free event, which is sponsored by Morningside’s Academic and Cultural Arts Series (ACAS).
The Mt. Zion Steppers, under the direction of LaKeshia Rainy, are dancers ages 10-18 from Sioux City who perform “stepping,” a traditional style of synchronized dance popular in the African-American community that was depicted in the 2007 box office success “Stomp the Yard.”
Aside from the performance by the Mt. Zion Steppers, the program will also include a presentation by Rainy about the origins and history of step dancing in the African-American community and dance instruction for interested participants from the audience, according to Sandi O’Brien, director of diversity affairs at Morningside College and the organizer of the event.
