College mission team to host Southern-style buffet dinner

The Morningside College Volunteers in Mission Team will host a Southern-style buffet dinner from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at Grace United Methodist Church, 1735 Morningside Ave.

Freewill offerings will be collected to help defray the costs of the mission team’s spring break trip to New Orleans, La, to help with the continuing recovery efforts following the 2005 Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Menu items will include “Big Easy” gumbo, old-fashioned potato soup, black-eyed pea soup, red beans and rice, cornbread, homemade biscuits, sweet potato pie, king cake, bread pudding and sweet tea.

Morningside’s mission team includes faculty, staff and students. About 20 volunteers will be working in New Orleans from March 14 to March 22 under the direction of the Rev. Kathy Olson, the college’s campus minister and director of church relations; Andy Heiser, executive director of information services at Morningside and dean of the Hickman-Johnson-Furrow Learning Center; and Sheri Hineman, area coordinator/coordinator of resident services at the college.
