Morningside College will host a birthday party to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Friday is Writing Day from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in the Yockey Family Community Room of the Olsen Student Center, 3609 Peters Ave.
The public is invited to the free event, which is sponsored by Morningside’s Academic and Cultural Arts Series (ACAS) and the Friday is Writing Day (FIWD) Committee.
Friday is Writing Day is a weekly brown bag lunch series featuring scheduled writers. Since the fall of 1988, an estimated 1,650 Morningside students, faculty, administration, staff, alumni and community friends have shared writings of all types.
“Every department in the college has participated in the series,” said Marty Knepper, coordinator of Friday is Writing Day and professor and chair of English at Morningside. “We have highlighted writing in various professions: film reviewing, accounting, ministry, politics and law. Elementary school children and high schoolers have read their writing. The series has been creative, lively and amazingly varied. From sharing recipes and family history to essays about frogs and Christmas to parodies and limericks—we have done it all. We have even had some celebrity writers such as financial columnist Jane Bryant Quinn and Tony-nominated playwright Bill Russell.”
The birthday party will feature readings from Friday is Writing Day’s past and present organized by the four co-founders of the Friday is Writing Day series: Tim Orwig, Carolyn Rants, Jim Scholten and Knepper. The program will include college history, creative writing, pieces that chronicle advances in the technology of writing within the past 20 years, original music and interdisciplinary writing.
“We are happy to have so many talented faculty, students and alumni participating in this community celebration of writing,” Knepper said. “We hope everyone who loves good writing will join us for the reading and for the extraordinary birthday cake and other edibles provided by Terri Curry (vice president for student life and enrollment at Morningside) and the Morningside food service, Sodexo Inc.”
