Morningside College will mark the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a special program “A Life of Service” on Monday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m. in Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Avenue. The free event is part of Morningside’s Academic and Cultural Arts Series (ACAS). The public is invited.
Sandi O’Brien, director of Diversity Affairs at Morningside, will emcee the event. Kathy Olson, campus pastor and director of church relations at Morningside, and Judy Shaw, pastor at the New Life Family Center in Sioux City, will lead the audience in prayer. Morningside College President John Reynders will welcome the audience.
Keynote speaker for the event will be Andre McWell, coordinator of the Student Success program at Morningside. McWell will speak on “Living a Life of Service.” In addition, Richard Hayes, Sioux City community activist, will recite King’s famous speech “I've Been to the Mountaintop.” Karen Mackey, Morningside alumna and executive director of the Sioux City Human Rights Commission, will also offer comments.
Music for the event will be provided by local gospel singer Kemi Jones as well as the Praise Team Ensemble from the New Life Family Center. A praise dance will be performed by Allison Nash, student from East Middle School.
