Morningside College
Art Professor John Bowitz has announced the American Vision
Award nominees and the Gold Key, Silver Key, and scholarship
award recipients for The Scholastic Art Awards Northwest Iowa
Regional Exhibition 2005.
Middle and high school
students from 21 northwest Iowa schools entered nearly 900
pieces into the competition. Of these, 310 were selected by
the judges for exhibition.
The exhibition, on
display in the Eppley and Helen Levitt
Art Galleries through Jan. 31,
is sponsored by Morningside College with support from the
Chesterman Company. Awards will be presented during a special
reception Sunday, Jan. 23, at noon
in Eppley Art Gallery. The public is invited.
The 50 Gold Key award-winning
pieces, including the five American Visions nominees, are
eligible to be selected for the annual National Exhibition
in New York City.
Jurors
for this year's competition were: John Kolbo, art instructor,
Morningside College; Terri McGaffin, visiting assistant professor
of art, Morningside College; Aaron Phillips, graphic designer,
A. J. Phillips Publishing Company, South Sioux City, Neb.;
and Nan Wilson, education director, Sioux City Art Center.
Judging for the awards was completed on Jan. 8. Award criteria
included originality, technical proficiency, and personal
vision or style.
The five students
whose works earned Gold Key awards and were
also nominated for the American Vision Award
include: Edward Castillo, Sioux City North High School; Heather
Douglas, Storm Lake High School; Tenisha
Kessler, West Monona Community School District; Irene Lopez,
Sioux City North Middle School; Elnora Turner, home schooled.
The Gold
Key Portfolio Award recipient was Andrea Mangold
of Storm Lake High School.

The Scholastic Art
& Writing Awards were founded in 1923 and have been administered
by the non-profit organization Alliance for Young Artists
and Writers, Inc., since 1994. Morningside College, with support
from Chesterman Company, is one of the Alliance's 90 regional
partners across the country that helps administer The Scholastic
Awards on the local level.
