Ten high school jazz choirs will perform for a rating and/or critiques during a workshop at Morningside College on Monday, Feb. 8, in the MacCollin Classroom Building/Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Ave.
The performances are free and open to the public.
High school choirs will perform pieces in various states of readiness between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. New performances will begin every half hour in Eppley Auditorium and/or MacCollin Classroom 100.
The Eclectix jazz choir from Morningside College will perform at 10:30 a.m. in Eppley Auditorium. This ensemble has been featured on public radio broadcasts and at informal parties and gatherings throughout Siouxland.
High school choirs are traveling from as far away as Eastern Iowa for the jazz workshop at Morningside College, where they can receive critiques from Kurt Runestadt, director of choral activities at Doane College in Crete, Neb.; Jamie Spillane, director of choral and vocal activities at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa; and Tim Watson, director of choral activities at Morningside College. Spillane also will be offering a clinic on jazz improvisation.
Schools participating in the jazz choir workshop include West High School, Sioux City; Beckman High School, Dyersville, Iowa; Marion High School, Marion, Iowa; Prairie Valley High School, Gowrie, Iowa; Spencer High School, Spencer, Iowa; Waukee High School, Waukee, Iowa; and Winterset High School, Winterset, Iowa.
