The Morningside College Volunteers in Mission (VIM) Team will host a Southern-style buffet dinner from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Grace United Methodist Church, 1735 Morningside Avenue.
A free-will offering will be taken to help defray the travel expenses for the VIM team’s upcoming spring break trip to Lake Charles, La., from March 2 to 11.
Menu items will include “Big Easy” gumbo, “Best Soup This Side of the Mississippi,” which is a black-eyed pea soup, old fashioned potato soup, red beans and rice, dirty rice, potato salad, corn bread, biscuits with strawberry butter, bread pudding, sweet potato pie, King cake, and pralines.
The Morningside team of over 20 volunteers includes faculty, staff, and students. They will be led by Kathy Olson, campus minister and director of church relations at Morningside, and Robbie Rohlena, dean of students.
While in Louisiana, the team will work in Lake Charles and surrounding areas to help in the recovery efforts after the 2005 Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, participate in activities to support Sioux City’s sister city relationship with Lake Charles, and join with the Morningside College choir for a special mission opportunity. The Morningside Choir is scheduled to perform a concert at University United Methodist Church in Lake Charles on Sunday, March 4.
