Winners From Morningside College Jazz Festival Announced

The award winners from the 33rd annual Morningside College Jazz Festival held Feb. 6 to 8 have been announced.


The award winners by class are:


Junior High/Middle School Class A-2A – first place, Anthon-Oto/Maple Valley; second place, Okoboji; third place, Sioux Central. Outstanding soloists were: Kelly Hein, vibes, Okoboji; and Samantha Timmerman, flute/saxophone, Anthon-Oto/Maple Valley.


Junior High/Middle School Class 3A-4A – first place, Storm Lake; second place, Kirn; third place, Le Mars Community. Outstanding soloists were: Wyatt Seals, piano, Kirn; and Nate Converse, vibes, Storm Lake.


High School Class A – first place, Aurelia; second place, George-Little Rock; third place, Pomeroy-Palmer; fourth place, East Greene; fifth place, Remsen St. Mary’s. Outstanding soloists were: Kelly Grow, vibes, East Greene; Jamie Seratt, bass and guitar, East Greene; and Derek Pitstick, drums, Pomery-Palmer.


High School Class 1A – first place, Central Lyon; second place, Kingsley-Pierson; third place, Manning; fourth place, Woodbury Central; fifth place, Des Moines Christian. Outstanding soloists were: Lexie Washburn, alto, Kingsley-Pierson; Rene Riewer, bass, Central Lyon; Andy Steissonman, alto, Manning; and Logan McCool, alto, Des Moines Christian.


High School Class 2A – first place, South O’Brien I; second place, Okoboji I; third place, Sioux Central; fourth place, Cherokee Washington; fifth place, South O’Brien II. Outstanding soloists were: Robyn Deloy, tenor, Sioux Central; Stephanie Wahlman, piano and vibes, Okoboji; and Jessica Lambertson, baritone sax, Okoboji.


High School Class 3A – first place, Maurice-Orange City/Floyd Valley; second place, Spirit Lake; third place, Storm Lake; fourth place, Sioux City Heelan; fifth place, Le Mars Community. Outstanding soloists were: Karissa Grotenhuis, drums, Maurice-Orange City/Floyd Valley; Alex Verdoorn, soprano saxophone, flute, and alto, Maurice-Orange City/Floyd Valley; Ali Braschars, trumpet, Storm Lake; and Jack Fitzgibbons, soprano saxophone, Spirit Lake.


High School Class 4A – first place, Sioux City North I; second place, Fargo South I; third place, Sioux City North II; fourth place, Sioux City East I; fifth place, Sioux City North III. Outstanding soloists were: Andrew Thoreen, trombone, Sioux City North; Steve Lambert, alto and tenor, Sioux City North; Dan Watkins, alto, Fargo South; and Spencer Martin, tenor, Sioux City North.

Nearly 60 high school and middle school instrumental jazz ensembles performed at the event.
