The Morningside College chapter of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) recently recognized two Morningside College students with Student Leader of the Month Awards for the month of December.
Emily Lechtenberg of Denison, Iowa, and David Riveros García of Hernandarias, Alto Paraná, in Paraguay each received the award. ODK is a national leadership honor society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character.
Lechtenberg is a junior majoring in secondary math education and minoring in psychology. She is vice president of Student Government, president of Morningside Activities Council and treasurer of Kappa Delta Pi education honor society. She is also a resident assistant and a member of Math Club. She was nominated for a Student Leader of the Month Award because of all of the work she has done over the past semester to make activities like Homecoming and hall functions run smoothly, and because a lot of activities on campus would not have been possible without her leadership and dedication.
Riveros García is a sophomore majoring in international affairs and minoring in economics. He is a Youth Ambassador of the Americas for Partners of the Americas and the U.S. Department of State. In 2009, he was named a Global Changemaker by the British Council. He was a presenter and panelist at events such as the World Economic Forum and the Global Youth Anti-Corruption Summit. He is a regional representative for the Global Youth Anti-Corruption Network in Latin America. Additionally, he is a co-founder, director and current advisor of Youth Change Reaction. He is developing an international anti-corruption project funded by the British Council and the World Bank Institute. Among his more recent accomplishments, he was a panelist at the second World Summit on Youth Volunteerism held in Colombia. On campus, he is the vice president of the International Students Association. He was nominated for the award for the leadership he has shown both internationally and in the classroom by continuing to be a competent student despite his vast array of involvement both on campus and internationally.
