Morningside College announces new appointments for six staff members

Morningside College recently announced new appointments for six staff members.

Receiving new appointments are Susan Burns as associate dean for academic affairs; Kim Hawkins as administrative assistant for assessment and institutional research and service learning coordinator; Sheri Hineman as assistant director of residence life; Andrew Pflipsen as associate dean of students; Suzy Turnquist as administrative assistant for the chemistry, biology, physics, psychology, math and computer science departments; and Jenny Welp as publications editor and writer.

Burns taught in the psychology department at Morningside for nine years. In her new position as associate dean, she supports the vice president for academic affairs in the management and administration of academic programs, and she is directly responsible for the registrar’s office. In addition, she is responsible for management of all adjunct faculty and the scheduling of courses each term. Burns has a doctorate from Kansas State University in Manhattan.

Hawkins came to Morningside in 2000 and has served as Walker Science Center building secretary and as administrative assistant to the associate dean of assessment and institutional research. In her new position, she still serves as administrative assistant for assessment and institutional research. She also serves as a resource to students, faculty or staff members interested in locating community service opportunities, and she supervises and coordinates the AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program at Morningside. Hawkins attended Morningside College.

Hineman came to Morningside in 2004 and has worked in residence life in various roles since that time. In her new position as assistant director of residence life, she coordinates the day-to-day functions of assigned residence halls, serves as residence life office manager, is responsible for the Residence Hall Association and coordinates the programming efforts of residence life paraprofessional staff. Hineman has a master’s degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

Pflipsen joined the staff in 2006 as an area coordinator for residence life. In his new position as associate dean of students, he is responsible for residence life, student government, discipline, diversity, international students, intramurals and other areas of student life. Pflipsen has a master’s degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

Turnquist has worked since 2008 as office manager for the Leo Kucinski Academy of Music at Morningside College. In her new position as administrative assistant for the chemistry, biology, physics, psychology, math and computer science departments, she assists with general office responsibilities, and she assists the department chairs with various tasks. Turnquist has a bachelor’s degree from Morningside College.

Welp came to Morningside in 2007 and has served as a public relations writer and editor of The Morningsider magazine. In her new position as publications editor and writer, she continues to prepare news releases, complete writing projects for other departments, and edit and write The Morningsider. She also is responsible for reviewing all college publications directed to external audiences. Welp has a bachelor’s degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
