Morningside College announces 2010 Walker Faculty Excellence Awards

Morningside College has awarded the 2010 Sharon Walker Faculty Excellence Awards to Dr. Kimberly Christopherson, assistant professor of psychology; Dr. William Heyborne, assistant professor of biology; and Dr. James March, professor of music.

Morningside President John Reynders presented the awards during the annual faculty banquet held December 9 at the Sioux City Country Club. The recipients, selected from a field of nominees by a panel of three outside evaluators, will each receive a $10,000 honorarium and $3,000 to use for faculty development.

The Sharon Walker Faculty Excellence Awards are funded by a gift from Morningside alumni Jim and Sharon Walker of Wayzata, Minn.

Criteria for selection include: teaching excellence, effective advising, scholarship, and service to Morningside College. The awards are based upon the accomplishments and activities of a faculty member during the previous academic year.

Christopherson started teaching at Morningside in 2007. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., and a master’s degree and doctorate from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D.  The Walker Award evaluators cited Christopherson for her commitment to excellence in teaching and her dedication to the profession.

Heyborne joined the Morningside faculty in 2007. He has a bachelor’s degree from Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah; a master’s degree from Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore.; and a doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo. The Walker Award evaluators commended Heyborne for embracing the joy of teaching and spreading the joy of learning.

March has been teaching at Morningside since 1986. He received a bachelor’s from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., and a master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Iowa. The Walker Award evaluators noted that in the classroom March displays a passion for both teaching and lifelong learning.

Gregg-Jolly, associate professor of biology and associate dean of the college, Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa; Dr. William Withers, Grant L.
