Morningside College presents “Side by Side by Sondheim ” at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 14, and Saturday, August 15, in the Buhler Outdoor Performance Center, 3625 Garretson Avenue, on the college’s campus. All performances are free and open to the public.
The final production in the 2009 season of Morningside’s Betty Ling Tsang Summer Fine Arts Series is sponsored by Wells’ Dairy Inc. of LeMars, Iowa. “Side by Side by Sondheim” is a musical revue that features the songs of Broadway and film composer Stephen Sondheim. The production first opened on Broadway in 1977 and ran for a total of 384 performances.
Randy Peters, artistic director for the Betty Ling Tsang Summer Fine Arts Series, said the Morningside production of “Side by Side by Sondheim” features a local cast performing songs that span Sondheim’s career from his earliest Broadway musicals such as “West Side Story” and “Gypsy” to his most recent shows such as “Into the Woods” and “Sweeney Todd.”
“This revue highlights the dazzling array of Sondheim's work,” Peters said. “Audience members will recognize many of his best-known songs from landmark Broadway shows and may be introduced for the first time to some of his relatively unknown compositions.”
In the event of rain, the performances will move to Klinger-Neal Theatre, 3700 Peters Avenue, on the Morningside campus.
