The Leo Kucinski Academy of Music (LKAM) at Morningside College is currently accepting applications for student musicians from beginner to high school who are interested in pursuing private study and for those wanting to participate in the Youth Orchestras program of the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra (SCSO). Instruction is available for all string and wind instruments, piano, and voice and will be held in the MacCollin classroom building, 3625 Garretson Ave., on the Morningside College campus.
Orchestra auditions for new members will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 6, beginning at 6 p.m. in the MacCollin classroom building. Students wishing to schedule an audition for the Youth Symphony program should contact Jill Wilson, director of the LKAM, at (712) 274-5357 or by e-mail at wilsonj@morningside.edu.
The first session for all academy students and orchestra members will begin with a pizza party on Monday, Sept. 11, at 5:30 p.m. in the lobby of Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Ave. A meeting for parents of all orchestra and LKAM students will be held that evening at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of Eppley Auditorium.
Course instructors include: Jameson Cooper, violin; Jacob Murphy, violin; Jungho Kim, violin; Eunho Kim, violin; Luis Vargas, viola; Joseph Shufro, cello; Amy Joseph, cello; Tom Miller, string bass; Michele Grossman, piano; Marlene Grossman, piano; Arne Sorenson, piano; Martha Councell, flute; Judy Walker, flute; Jay O’Leary, woodwinds; Clifford Towner, trumpet; Alan Arnold, low brass; Ron Smith, percussion; Gail Dooley, voice; and Jill Wilson, voice.
The LKAM is a partnership between Morningside College and the Sioux City Symphony and offers a series of musical opportunities for area young people including instruction in all string and wind instruments, piano, and voice. The Youth Orchestras include the Youth Symphony, for the most advanced high school and college musicians; the Philharmonia, for middle school through early high school students; and the Symphonette, for beginning and intermediate violin, viola, cello, and bass players.
The Youth Symphony is directed by Joseph Shufro, associate professor of music at Morningside and principal cellist for the SCSO. The Philharmonia is directed by Jungho Kim, director of the Kucinski Academy’s Early String Program and assistant conductor of the SCSO. The Symphonette is conducted by Tom Miller, principal cellist of the SCSO.
Jungho Kim, violin and program director, and Amy Joseph, cello, will also be offering Early String Program lessons for students ages four through nine interested in beginning strings instruction.
