“Sum Parts,” an exhibit of new paintings by Sioux City artist Mark Kochen, will be on display Thursday, Aug. 17, through Sunday, Sept. 17, in Eppley Art Gallery, 3625 Garretson Avenue. An artist’s reception will be held on Friday, Sept. 8, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the gallery. The exhibit and reception are open to the public.
“Sum Parts” includes a series of acrylic paintings dealing with the themes of anxiety, pain, longevity, humor, and daily experiences. The images are full of pattern, motion, and chromatic shifts.

Kochen has displayed his work at juried and invitational exhibitions around the state of Iowa including Iowa State University in Ames, the Octagon Community Art Center in Ames, the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Lakes Art Center in Okoboji, and Macnider Art Museum in Mason City, among others. He was a featured artist for the Sioux City Art Center’s “Discovery Dog” public art project and the Rocklin Manufacturing mural in Sioux City, and has assisted with other public art projects in Sioux City and New York City. He has been the recipient of several artists’ grants including a Focus Grant from Iowa State University and the Liquitex Paint Award.
Kochen has taught art classes at Western Iowa Tech Community College and the Sioux City Art Center. He holds a bachelor of fine arts from the College of Design at Iowa State University.
Eppley Art Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or by appointment.
