Morningside College schedules freshman orientation August 20-23

Morningside College will welcome more than 370 freshman students to campus during orientation activities scheduled from Saturday, August 20, through Tuesday, August 23. Fall semester classes for all Morningside students begin Wednesday, August 24.

Freshmen will move into residence halls from 8 a.m. to noon on August 20. Other events scheduled during the day include an orientation lunch in the Olsen Student Center, welcomes from Morningside College President John Reynders and Robin Reynders, a reception on the lawn in front of Lewis Hall, distribution of notebook computers and a concert by the rock band Quartus in Eppley Auditorium.

According to Shari Benson, Morningside’s director of first-year students, the orientation schedule is designed to help students make the transition to college life.

“We have planned a variety of activities that make it easier for Morningside’s Class of 2015 to get better acquainted with each other and our campus,” Benson said. “By the end of orientation, the freshmen also will be ready to successfully start their first year of classes at Morningside.”

Events scheduled for Sunday, August 21, include a worship service in the Buhler Outdoor Performance Center, brunch in the Olsen Student Center, a “Minute to Win It” competition and a “Welcome to Morningside” picnic on the Lewis Hall front lawn.

Highlights for Monday, August 22, include “The Ultimate Road Trip,” a presentation about choices students make during college, a community service project to package meals for children in Haiti, a session titled “Surviving and Thriving in an Addictive Society” and an “Amazing Race-Morningside Style” competition.

On Tuesday, August 23, students will meet in assigned classrooms for Passport, a semester-long course required for all first-year students at Morningside.
