The Community Enhancement Committee of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce has presented its “Star of Siouxland Award” to Morningside College. The award recognizes Morningside for its campus beautification and improvement efforts.
Tom Elsen of American Pop Corn Company and Regina Roth of Beef Products Inc., cochairs of the Community Enhancement Committee, recently presented the award to Morningside College President John Reynders during a luncheon on the college’s campus.
“Morningside’s outstanding efforts over the past several years to improve the physical appearance of its campus make it a deserving recipient of this award,” Elsen said.
According to Reynders, the college has spent approximately $25 million since 2003 on new construction, renovation of existing facilities and improvements to the campus grounds. He noted that Morningside funded the capital expenditures entirely through donations and that 85 percent of the donations came from outside the Sioux City area.
“Thanks to tremendous support from our board of directors, alumni, friends, faculty and staff we have made significant upgrades and additions to our campus,” Reynders said. “We are building a beautiful, student-friendly campus that provides an environment conducive to living and learning.”
The Hilker Campus Mall is the most recent construction project completed on the Morningside campus. The $4.2 million pedestrian mall and green space was dedicated in May and includes three new outdoor gathering spaces: the Buhler Outdoor Performance Center, the Lieder Family Fountain and the Kline Family Pergola.
