New staff members announced

Morningside College has announced the addition of 11 new staff members.

The new staff members at Morningside include Beth Bubb, administrative assistant for student services; Trent Fredericksen, area coordinator/leadership academy coordinator; Brett Lyon, assistant director of security; Jay Malin, head groundskeeper; Cindy Nimmo, degree auditor; Randy Peters, director of the Betty Tsang Summer Music Festival; Jenny Welp, public relations writer; and Sandra Van Drie-Yockey, full-time graduate on-campus coordinator.

Katie Bowen, Ashley Brewer, and Allison Kirby have also joined the staff as admissions counselors.

Bubb previously was the district administrative secretary for the United Methodist Church, and her office was located in the Olsen Student Center at Morningside for many years. In her new position at Morningside, she serves as a general information center for visitors to Student Services. She is responsible for general office and receptionist duties and also assists the dean of advising/associate dean of students. Bubb has a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Dakota.

Fredericksen is responsible for coordinating day-to-day functions in assigned residence halls and apartment buildings. He coordinates the campus Leadership Academy and serves as the advisor for Student Government. Most recently, he was the associate residence life manager for the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County in Wausau, Wisconsin. Fredericksen has a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, and is working toward a master’s degree from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Penn.

Lyon is responsible for supervising the security officers on the night shift and working with the director of security on all aspects of security operations. He previously worked as a substitute teacher for the Sioux City Community School District. Lyon received a bachelor’s degree from Morningside, and worked for the security department while he was a student at the college.

Cindy Nimmo
Cindy Nimmo

Malin is responsible for grounds care and performance of duties established by the director of physical plant. Most recently, he was manager for the Earl May Garden Center on Gordon Drive. Malin has an associate’s degree from the University of Maryland Institute of Applied Agriculture.

Nimmo came to Morningside from Briar Cliff University, where she worked as a staff assistant in the registrar’s office. In her new position at Morningside, she audits student files for progress toward graduation and verifies graduation eligibility. She assists with preparations for graduation and works individually with students to help monitor progress toward graduation. Nimmo attended Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Ill., and then Morningside College.

Randy Peters
Randy Peters

Peters is responsible for coordinating events at the Lucy Buhler Outdoor Performance Center, which is currently in the construction phase and will be complete by May of 2008. A professional singer, Peters has traveled from coast to coast singing with opera companies and orchestras, and he is the staff tenor at two local churches. He is an adjunct voice teacher at Morningside and also maintains a private voice studio. Peters has a bachelor’s degree from Morningside College.

Jenny Welp

Welp previously worked three years as a reporter for the Sioux City Journal. In her new position, she does research, writing, editing, and online posting for the public relations department. She also serves as editor of the college’s alumni magazine, The Morningsider, which is published twice a year.  Welp has a bachelor’s degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Van Drie-Yockey is responsible for managing graduate programming on the Morningside campus and for programming in distance learning formats. Most recently, she worked as a department chair and academic advisor for Northeast Iowa Community College. She has a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, and a master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa.

In their new positions as admissions counselors, Bowen, Brewer, and Kirby are responsible for generating student prospects/inquiries from an assigned geographic region. They provide information and guidance to prospective students and their families regarding admission policies and procedures, as well as educational programs and student life. Bowen, Brewer, and Kirby are 2007 Morningside graduates.
