The Morningside College Department of Theatre & Dance will present “Rapunzel” at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 20, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 21, in Klinger-Neal Theatre, 3700 Peters Ave. The production is for children of all ages.
There also will be special weekday performances Monday, April 22, through Thursday, April 25, for area preschools and grade schools. Those performances are by reservation only.
“Rapunzel” tells the story of a girl with long golden hair who is locked in a tower by a sorceress. The storyline is featured in movies such as “Tangled” and “Shrek.” The Morningside College production is based on the 1812 version of the Grimm Brothers fairy tale.
Student cast members are Scott Kruse of Guthrie Center, Iowa, as Prince Daniel; Lynsay Haverland of Dubuque, Iowa, as Rapunzel; Mel Richter of Rock Valley, Iowa, as Mother Gothel; Elizabeth Planck of Omaha, Neb., as Gopher; Addi Morgan of Kansas City, Kan., as Gretchen; and Scott Haas of Algona, Iowa, as Martin. Alainna Joly also will appear in the play as the 8-year-old Rapunzel.
Students on the crew are Molly Baker of Sioux City, stage manager; Abbie Atkinson of Algona, Iowa, lights; and Kari McLeod of Hastings, Neb., props.
The musical is directed by Tracy Bennett, adjunct professor of dance. Others assisting with the production are Steve Lundberg, music director; Kenton Jones, technical director; Betty Skewis-Arnett, costumes; Randy Peters, wigs; and Ric Mohr, lighting design.
Seats for the weekend performances are $5 general admission and will be sold at the door starting one hour prior to each show. Reservations for the weekday performances may be made by contacting the box office at 712-274-5702.
