James Autry, author, poet and former Fortune 500 executive, will give a lecture on “Servant Leadership” at Morningside College at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, in Klinger-Neal Theatre, 3700 Peters Ave.
He also will give a short address at the 75th anniversary celebration of Kiosk, Morningside College’s literary magazine, at 3 p.m. in the UPS Auditorium in Lincoln Center, 3627 Peters Ave. Both events are free and open to the public.
Autry worked for The Meredith Corporation for 30 years, retiring as senior vice president of the corporation and president of the magazine group. The son and grandson of Mississippi Baptist ministers, Autry has written 10 books, including “The Servant Leader.” His writing also has appeared in anthologies and magazines. The Kentucky Poetry Review published a special James A. Autry issue in 1991.
Autry was one of the poets featured in Bill Moyers’ 1989 special series “The Power of the Word” on PBS, and he was featured in Moyers’ 1995 book “The Language of Life.” His work also was featured on Garrison Keillor’s “Writer’s Corner” on National Public Radio.
Autry lives in Des Moines, Iowa, and is married to former Iowa Lt. Gov. Sally Pederson.
